Assign a Static IP to a Basic Clock
Clocks, like any network device, require an IP address to operate on your network. Most network routers support DHCP, which automatically assigns an available IP to the clock. However, some networks require a static IP, which needs to be manually entered on the clock. All clocks are shipped with DHCP enabled by default, so this article explains how to disable DHCP and add a static IP through the clock's network setup screen.
Download a printable version of these instructions: Assign a Static IP to a Basic Clock.pdf
IMPORTANT: This article applies to basic clocks, like the Punch, Punch+, Z-Series, GT-400 clocks. If you have a Touch or Vision Series clock, the process for assigning a static IP is different. In that case, reference your manual or locate the article specific to your clock.
Before You Start
To configure a static IP on the clock, get the following from your network administrator:
- static IP
- subnet mask
- default gateway
- DNS server
- secondary DNS server
These items need to be entered on each clock you are adding to your account.
Access the Clock's Network Setup
Network configuration is done through the clock's Network Setup screen. How you access Network Setup varies slightly by clock.
Punch/Punch+, Z33/34, Z14:
Press the "*" (star) key.
Z18:
Press the MENU key twice.
GT-400:
Press the CAPS key.
Pressing the "#" (pound) key twice also works on some clocks to access Network Setup.
Once you have pressed the key that corresponds to your clock, you will see the SYSTEM INFO screen. From the the SYSTEM INFO screen:
- Type 2663 followed by ENTER or OK. That takes you to the Network Setup menu.
- Press "1" on the keypad to view the TCP/IP Settings.
You are now viewing the TCP/IP Options screen, which indicates if the clock is using DHCP or a static IP.
There are two options on this screen which are selected with the corresponding number on the keypad:
- "1"(show lease) displays the current network settings, like the IP address
- "2" (change) is used if you want to change the setting of the clock.
Change from DHCP to Static IP
Using the steps described in the previous section (Access the Clock's Network Setup), access the TCP/IP Options screen and follow these steps:
- Press "2" (change).
- The next screen explains that the "*" (star key) is used to enter periods in your network settings. Press OK or ENTER to advance past this screen.
- Enter the IP address followed by OK.
- Enter the subnet mask followed by OK.
- Enter the default gateway followed by OK.
- Enter the primary DNS followed by OK.
- Enter the secondary DNS followed by OK.
- Confirm you want to save your changes with OK. If you want to cancel without saving, press "X" to abandon.
The clock will now use the updated network settings.
Change from Static IP to DHCP
If the clock is using a static IP and you want to change back to DHCP, the steps are very similar to what was done for setting a static IP. Using the steps described earlier (Access the Clock's Network Setup), access the TCP/IP Options screen. Press "2" (autoconfig) to enable DHCP.
WARNING: Changing to from Static IP to DHCP wipes out all saved network configuration.
